Geoffrey O’Brien

Geoffrey J. O’Brien joined Purnell, McKennett & Menke in 2021 after more than 10 years of working for law firms dedicated to creditors’ rights.  With those firms, he handled hundreds of unlawful detainer actions in district and circuit courts throughout Virginia and defended against several appeals in the Virginia Supreme Court.  He has represented institutional lenders in bankruptcy courts throughout Central and Eastern Virginia.  Mr. O’Brien regularly represented fiduciaries respecting their accountings before Commissioners of Accounts throughout Virginia, and in dozens of original circuit court actions required for these accountings.  Prior to civil practice, Mr. O’Brien worked for a year as an assistant public defender in Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, defending juvenile and adult clients against both misdemeanor and felony charges.  

Mr. O’Brien is licensed to practice in all Virginia and District of Columbia courts.  

Mr. O’Brien earned his Juris Doctor from Ave Maria School of Law in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2004.  Between years of law school he interned with: the Hon. Paul V. Gadola (E.D. of Michigan); the Special Proceedings Division of the US Attorney’s Office in DC; the medical malpractice defense firm of Hebert, Eller & Chandler, PLLC; and the Hon. Joseph R. Falvey, Jr. (credited for his contribution to 53 NAVAL L. REV. 1 (2006)).  He received his Bachelor of Science in business from Cornell University.  

Mr. O’Brien is a native of western New York where he earned his Eagle Scout and was a long-time BSA camp counselor at Camp Gorton in Dundee, NY.  Prior to law school, he was able to work as a counselor for Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.  He enjoys the outdoors, church activities, music and reading books to his daughter.  

He lives in Manassas with his wife and daughter.
